2015 Welcome Letter:

Dear Quagmire Participants,

Welcome to Denver, Colorado host of the 2015 Quagmire. Co-hosting cities will be Aurora, Brighton, Golden and Lakewood with all of the events being played in Adams, Arapahoe, Denver and Jefferson Counties.  A wide variety of golf courses will provide a challenge for all golfers while giving everyone a good taste of what the Denver metro area has to offer.

We start off Thursday June 11th with the “Practice Round at Murphy Creek GC in Aurora, COThis “prairie-links style course has over 80 bunkers. It was the site of the 2008 U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship.  The prairie views are spectacular and the golf is equally as challenging.

Friday morning brings a step into the past with a Jim Engh designed course at the base of the foothills in Golden, COFossil Trace is a popular destination Golf Course that winds you through history as you play.  Mining equipment decorates the golf course bringing out the more recent history of the location but more impressively are 64 million year old fossils found at the course.  Ever seen the fossilized footprints of a Triceratops? You will here.

Friday afternoon brings us to what we believe to be one of the two best “for the price” golf courses in the Denver area, Fox Hollow Golf Club. This Lakewood, CO course is well maintained and challenging.  You will probably see a fox, a deer, a coyote and maybe even an elk.  Of course like any of the courses we will play you may come across a rattle snake. Definitely leave them be and take the unplayable.  Even if it is the yellow ball” and although there is anti-venom for them,
trust me when I say that your Colorado golf experience will be much better without a trip to the local emergency room thanks to a Rocky Mountain Rattler.

Saturday is the day of The Chalice”.  This course is definitely #1 in Colorado for the price. However, we will argue it is the one of the best if not the best in the area price aside. We will be playing two challenging match-play rounds at the Riverdale Dunes Golf Course in Brighton, COThis is a Scottish style links course designed by Pete Dye.  Their website says it all with these accolades:
·       One of Americas most affordable courses”—Golf Magazine
·       “# 1 Public Course in Colorado”— Colorado Golfer Newspaper
·       One of Americas Best Courses Everyone Can Play—Golf Digest
·       Top 75 Public Courses —Golf Digest Magazine
·       Denver’s most affordable course 2014- Avid Golfer
In addition, Riverdale is the home of the Colorado Golf Hall of Fame!  Riverdale Dunes was the unanimous choice by the
Quagmire committee for hosting the Chalice event. It has hosted the USGA Public Links Championship, numerous CGA
championships and was the site of the Nike Tour Colorado Classic which was once won by a no-name golfer Stewart Cink. This course is always in great shape and it is very challenging but trust me when I say you can score on it, even if it is from a
maintenance road or with the help of the back of a turtle to save you from a water hazard.

Sunday is the “Singles Championship and what better place to play it than the host of all three Health One Colorado Open Championships, Senior, Women’s and Men’s and the host of the 2016 NCAA Division II National Championships. In fact, we will be playing it only 9 days after the Colorado Senior Open. Green Valley Ranch Golf Club is located in Denver, CO and is only a few minutes from Denver International Airport.  This course is extremely challenging, always very well groomed and
will be an excellent host for the race for the Goblet”.

Good luck and remember you are at 5,280 feet of elevation so drink lots of water and think twice about your club choice. Sincerely,

Your 2015 Quagmire Host Committee

GENERAL RULES

1.  USGA rules govern all play with the only exceptions being the ones explicitly outlined in these rules.
2.  Local rules are on each course scorecard and will override any USGA rule.
3.  Rules shall be policed by the group you are playing with and any disputes shall be reviewed and settled by the rules committee after the round. The rules committee will reserve the right to penalize a player or team with strokes in stroke play or loss of a hole in match play.  All rule infractions will be enforced with penalties and no player or team shall ever be disqualified without a unanimous vote by the rules committee and a ¾ vote by all players involved in the round.
4.  Out of bounds and lost ball shall be played as lateral hazards in order to keep up the pace of play.  The entry point of an out of bounds ball or the drop location of a lost ball must be agreed
upon by the player and at least one member of the group. That member must be a player from the opposing team. In 4-man team events the group should decide and should error on
the side of disadvantage to the group. A one-stroke penalty shall apply for lost ball that reasonably should have been in play. A two-stroke penalty for out of bounds.
5.  Every player shall pay in $10 per round for skins, proximities and payouts. This is voluntary but highly encouraged. If you do not pay in you are not eligible to win.
6.  All handicaps will be figured to the low handicap in the game.
7.  All disputes of handicap or other shall be brought to the rules committee and the committee will review and make final binding decisions.
8.  In team events where one team does not have all players for part or all of the round a blind draw from all the other competing players will be done to determine the missing teammate.
9.  Gimmies.  Concessions are a part of match play but not stroke play.  Keep in mind we have
skins on the line and other groups playing so, no gimmies for non-match play games.
10. Tie breakers for all rounds except chalice rounds and singles championship round will be a putt-off by one player from each team involved.  The team will choose the player to do the
putt-off.
11. Tie breaker for the singles championship 1st place only shall be determined by sudden death play-off hole(s) if available and a putt off if a play-off hole is not available.  All other ties will
split prizes accordingly.

12. Tie breaker for the chalice shall be a chip-off best two of three with the participating players being chosen by the captains and the matchups and order being decided by the choice of the captains. The captains will flip a coin and the winner of the coin flip will choose if they want to pick the order their players go or who they match-up against for the chip-off. The other captain will then get the other choice.  Each captain will choose three players for the chip-off. The chalice will be awarded to the team which gets closer on two of the chip-offs.

THE CHALICE SPECIFIC RULES

1.  Matchups
a.  We will draw Friday night for the chalice matchups.
2.  Scoring
a.  Nassau for each match. Three points available for each match.  One point for the winner of the front, one point for the winner of the back and one point for the winner of
the total. Four possibilities exist for final score of each match, 3-0, 2 ½-½, 2-1 or 1 ½-1
½.
3.  Payouts
a.  $5 per point won per player in a match. b.  $10 per player on the winning team.
4.  Morning Round Game
a.  2 man teams match play.
b.  Front nine is modified alternate shot.  Each player tees off on every hole. The best ball for each team is chosen and the person that did not hit that ball hits the next shot.
Their teammate hits the next shot and so on into the hole.
c.   In alternate shot each player may choose to use their own ball but must not improve the lie at all.
d.  Handicaps for alternate shot shall be figured by using 60% of the low handicap teammates tourney handicap figured to one decimal place and adding this to 40% of
the high handicap teammates tourney handicap figured to one decimal place.  These are added together and then rounded appropriately and this is the teams handicap for the alternate shot portion.  e.g. Team 1 player A is a 12 and player B is a 21. Team 2
player A is a 16 and player B is a 15. Team 1 is (12*0.6) + (21*0.4) = 7.2 + 8.4 = 15.6
= 16. Team 2 is (16*0.4) + (15*0.6) = 6.4 + 9.0 = 15.4 = 15. The difference between the handicaps is 1 so, Team 1 gets a bump on the hardest handicap hole on the
course. Since we are only playing 9 holes this way then a difference of 2 would still
only allow a bump on the hardest handicap hole. Differences of 3 and 4 will mean a bump on the hardest and third hardest holes and so on.
e.  The back nine will be best ball.
5.  Afternoon Round Game
a.  One on one match play.
